Cliffdale Elementary becomes Sustainable Sandhills ‘Walk the Walk’ Green School of the Year

Cliffdale Elementary was honored in June as the first Green School to be awarded the ‘Walk the Walk’, the outstanding Green Certified School in Cumberland County. This outstanding elementary school won with their unique approach to making sure their school’s climate reflected the commitment to our sustainable future. This year was the first year Sustainable Sandhills and the Go Green Initiative focused on Green Certified Schools looking for leaders of sustainability in our school community. The nominees were from all over the county and each had a remarkable Green School program at their school. These standout programs meant the competition was stiff. Those nominated were all elementary schools: Alma Easom, Beaver Dam, Brentwood, Cashwell, Cliffdale, E.E. Miller, Ferguson-Easley, Gallberry Farm, J.W. Coon, Lillian Black, Loyd Auman and Stoney Point.

2015-2016 Green Apple a Day School System

The Go Green Initiative (GGI) is a grassroots program that teaches students personal responsibility for the earth and helps schools evaluate every aspect of their environmental impact. We have partnered with the local non-profit Sustainable Sandhill’s to implement their Green Schools Program throughout our system. Green schools are healthy, conducive to learning and sustainable, saving energy, resources, and money.

WHO SAVED 25%  IN kWh USE LAST YEAR?
GO GREEN Initiative Announces Cumberland County Schools Winners of this year’s Electrical Incentive Program.

We are returning $81,302 to our schools for deferring costs of 1.8 million kWh last school year. This equals deferred weatherized costs of approximately $928,000 this past  year. Since the 2010-11 school year, we have deferred costs of approximately $3.4 million from electrical conservation. All schools who win will have the option of choosing where their monies will be spent, either school instructional supplies or school improvement for their green school’s program. Once decided, the school’s choice should be reported to Joyce Bowling with the Energy Office before the close of business October 11th, 2016.
